Перевозка около 125 тыс. кубинских беженцев из г. Мариэль на Кубе в г. Ки-Вест [Key West], шт. Флорида, в период с 21 апреля по 26 сентября 1980, в которой приняли участие сотни частных катеров и лодок (так называемая "флотилия свободы" ["freedom flotilla"]). Многие суда были собственностью американских кубинцев [Cuban-Americans] или наняты ими для перевозки родственников. Позднее обнаружилось, что шестая часть мариэльских беженцев [Marielistas] имела криминальное прошлое, о чем рассказывается в фильме "Лицо со шрамом" ["Scarface"] (1983) с А. Пачино [Pacino, Al (Alfred)].
